My name is Shane Faber, and I am from Somerset.
In late 2010 at the age of 9, with no previous racing history, and only 1 day of riding experience, I entered into a British Championship 50cc mini grand prix race at Lydd in Kent on a modified Conti 50cc geared race bike. I qualified at the back of the grid in 12th position in the dry amongst some really fast riders. Come race day on Sunday it was torrential rain all day but I managed make my way smoothly past other riders to finish with two 8th places and one 7th place overall - but gaining a 1st place in my modified class!
In 2011 aged 10,
I competed in the British Championship which had 8 rounds consisting of 24 races across Great Britain on the larger kart circuits. I rode a totally standard early model Metrakit GP50cc race bike which was underpowered against some of the newer bikes on the grid; however I had a successful rookie season including a 1st place, two 2nd places, one 3rd place, and finished 5th in the British championship overall.
In 2012, aged 11,
I competed again in the British Mini GP50cc Metrakit Championship with a newer and more competitive bike. In early March I completed 4 days of pre-season testing in Spain in which I was consistently one of the top 3 fastest riders on track all week. In 2012 I was consistently running in third place in the championship all year, but finally finished in 4th place in the championship.
In 2013, aged 12,
I stepped up to the more powerful British Mini GP 70cc Championship. With help for 2013 from JDF, "Shane has progressed markedly with his racecraft and understanding of how to get the best out of himself and machinery." I took 4th place in the champioship but my riding has significant improved. During this year he has made the transition from the smaller 70 Metrakit to the larger and more powerful Aprilia RS125. The move to the larger machine is in readiness for a full season in 2014 in the prestigious Aprilia Superteen Challenge through which most of our top riders competed in during their formative years in the sport.
In 2014, aged 13,
I set on to the aprilia superteen challenge, I started the Newcomers alight from round one at Brands Hatch in early March with four straight wins. He backed it up with another win, second, and two fourth places at the second round at Donington Park.
After bringing the bike up to speed with a Magtune tuned engine I again took all four wins at the fast Snetterton track, and the toughest track in the series for young riders at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. At this point I was running away with the Newcomers however racing throws a curved ball as the Americans say from time to time and it did at the Oulton Park round.
At Oulton Park I took a fast tumble in qualifying resulting in me taking no further part in the round and lost the potential to consolidate my lead in the Newcomers Championship. It took a bit of time for the feel to come back but by the last round at Mallory Park, I was back to the form I saw earlier in the year. I led two of the four races over the weekend however in my eagerness to take my first win (battling hard with second place) I high sided exiting the tricky Edwina’s Chicane resulting in a broken collarbone and thumb.
Overall taking second place in the nitro newcomers and a very good first season in the Superteen Challenge Championship.
